How is a website built?
There are several stages to developing a high-quality website. IDS deals with the inner workings of your website. If you think of what it takes to build a new house, CNS is the general contractor that builds the house and the postal service that routes visitors to your website. However, there are other stages in completing the house other than just putting the materials together.
- Concept Design (Architect) - Like the architect for your home, a graphics designer must spend some time to get to know what you are looking for in your website and then create a "blueprint" for how your website will look. Just as the architect has to decide how many rooms and how they will fit together, the graphics designer must decide how many parts your website will have as well as how it will all fit together. Generally speaking, there are four parts of a website that must always be included: header, navigation, body, footer. These four parts can split into many various sub sections of your website as needed. The graphics designer must also choose colors and add flash to the design, such as sprites, gradients, drop shadows and any number of other graphic techniques.
- Domain Registration & Website Hosting (Address Information) - Before a house can be built, you must survey and plot a piece land, then give it a physical address. This is the same for domain names and website hosting. The "piece of land" that your website will sit on is the hosting account. This refers to the physical hardware that your website files are stored. The "postal address" where your website can be found is your domain name. Unlike the postal address, you can be creative and decide what is the easiest and most catchy domain name for you or your business.
- Development (General Contractor) - This is such a vital part of building your website and it is very involved. To be brief, when you develop your website, you have to choose the right materials that will be most cost effective and that will last a long time. In the case of website develop, you must choose which programming languages will be appropriate to achieve the end result and how cost effective can you complete the project.
- Search Engine Optimization (Utilities) - Before you put the dry wall on the house, you must first put in the wiring and the plumbing. All too often, "web designers" neglect the fact that search engine optimization must happen before and after the website is completed. If you cross wires or forget to put in the pipe that directs hot water to your shower, it is much more expensive to have these issues repaired. If search engines cannot "enter" your website and properly index your pages, then you will not have a high page ranking. In essence your website will be broken. Think about like this, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear the crash, does it make a sound? If no one can go to google or yahoo and find your website, does it exist?
- Content Writing (Interior Design) - This is the fun part of building any website and yet, it is the most neglected. Pretend for a minute that your brand new house is built and you are ready to move in. You decide to place your couch in the bathroom (because you opted for the bigger bathroom), your big screen TV in the kitchen and your dining room table in your bedroom. Take it a step further and pretend that you just opened your doors to your new retail business and you put the checkout register in the stock room and you put the break room right by the entrance. Would your customers be compelled to stay? You must write your content in a meaninful way that draws in your customers or clients and makes them stay to "find out more".
- Internet / Search Engine Marketing - Many free agents are now offering this service to clients. It is just like regular marketing, except you are dealing with techniques that only exist in cyberspace. Some examples are Pay-Per-Click, Organic SEO, Affiliate Programs, Banner Advertisements, Online Coupons/Discounts, etc.
