Danny Samaniego of our BNI Synergy chapter and his brother, Dr. Marco Samaniego, need volunteers and donations for an upcoming annual Thanksgiving event. Here is their story:
In 1992 Hands of Luke Medical Ministries began providing poverty-stricken families in the colonias with a Thanksgiving meal. Many of these families may live without running water or electricity. The meal begins with turkey, dressing, vegetables, a roll and ends with pie.
In 1992 the goal was to feed 1,000 people, which was exceeded when 1,300 people came and ate. Today, more than 15,000 people enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
The food is provided through donations and prepared throughout November with the help of volunteers who come from all over. Every available oven in El Paso is utilized. It is a monumental effort that is very welcome by families in the colonias.
The Christmas Outreach Project began in 1992. Hands of Luke wanted to provide a gift for children in need. Their families were among the poorest in Juarez. A gift package containing a small toy, a Christmas stocking with candy, fruit, socks and underwear are given along with a meal. Donated items are gathered up and packaged by volunteers. Over 6,000 packages were given away in 2003!
Other programs that Hands of Luke provide throughout the year include:
- two children's homes where abandoned children receive three meals a day, a clean bed and a chance to attend public school
- A fully equipped medical facility that includes a pharmacy, medical lab and an outpatient surgical unit.
- Retirement homes for retired pastors with no income upon retirement.
- Three nutritional centers that serve more than 700 children one meal a day.
- Prisoner Outreach helps to provide more than 2000 inmates with food, hygiene kits, Bibles and blankets.
- Clothing, shoes, hygiene kits and food is distributed constantly to families with little to nothing and may live in the city streets.
